Why the acronyms became marketing
Sellers sometimes present one method as inherently superior. GIA research documents gem-quality diamonds produced by both processes, including large stones and treated examples.
Growth method versus treatment
HPHT can refer to a growth process and also to a post-growth treatment. These are not the same event. A CVD-grown diamond may later undergo HPHT treatment without becoming an HPHT-grown diamond.
What the buyer should ask
- Is the diamond clearly disclosed as laboratory-grown?
- Does the report identify the origin and relevant treatment information?
- Is the report number verifiable?
- Does the diamond look transparent, lively and attractive?
- Is the current price competitive for the actual stone?
Do not pay more because a salesperson taught you a new acronym. Pay for a diamond you understand.

What is the difference between HPHT and CVD diamonds?

Is one method better?
Not universally. Either method can produce attractive gem-quality diamonds. The actual stone, disclosure, report and price matter more than the acronym alone.
Can CVD diamonds receive HPHT treatment?
Yes. Some CVD-grown diamonds receive post-growth HPHT treatment to improve color.
Can you tell growth method by looking?
Not reliably with unaided observation. Laboratories use specialized testing to identify growth features.
Should the report identify the method?
Report practices vary by laboratory and product. Always review the actual report and any treatment disclosure.
