We use reports to confirm identity, measurements and graded characteristics. We still place the diamond on the table.
First, it is a report—not a warranty
The industry casually says “certificate,” but grading laboratories issue reports. A report documents the laboratory's findings at the time of examination. It does not promise that every diamond with matching grades will look identical.
GIA and IGI both provide report-verification tools. Before debating logos, verify that the report exists and matches the stone.

Why two identical grades can look different
Color and clarity grades are ranges. Cut categories contain multiple proportion combinations. Fancy shapes can vary dramatically in outline and facet pattern. A report can document measurements without showing whether an oval has a distracting bow tie or whether a cushion has the kind of pattern you prefer.
How we use the report
We confirm the report number, origin disclosure, measurements, carat weight, color, clarity, finish, fluorescence and relevant comments. Then we examine the stone for features the paper cannot finish evaluating for you.
Do not buy the laboratory logo. Buy the diamond—with documentation you understand.

Is GIA better than IGI?
Both are established grading laboratories. The useful question is whether the report is authentic, appropriate to the diamond and understood in context. Diamond Consulate evaluates the diamond as well as the report.
Do GIA and IGI reports include the 4Cs?
Yes. Both issue reports that document core diamond characteristics. Exact report formats and services vary by diamond type and laboratory.
Can a grading report guarantee beauty?
No. A report records graded characteristics and measurements. It cannot fully communicate facet personality, transparency, bow tie, contrast pattern or how the diamond appears in motion.
Should lab-grown diamonds have reports?
Meaningful center stones should generally have reliable documentation clearly identifying laboratory-grown origin and the reported characteristics.
How do I verify a report?
Use the laboratory's official online report-verification system and confirm the report number and details match the diamond being offered.
