Why lighting changes everything
Fire is easiest to see in directed spot lighting. Broad diffuse light emphasizes brightness. Everyday environments mix both. A diamond can look spectacular in one room and quieter in another without changing at all.
Why cleanliness may matter more than one grade
Skin oils, lotion and soap film interfere with light entering and leaving the stone. A clean Very Good diamond can easily look livelier in daily wear than a dirty Excellent diamond.
Cut matters—but context still matters
GIA evaluates brightness, fire and scintillation as part of its cut system for standard round brilliants. That science matters. Our practical position remains: compare the actual diamonds and ask whether the visible difference justifies the price difference.
Shape changes the personality
Rounds tend to produce a balanced brilliant pattern. Radiants can feel energetic. Cushions may show chunky flashes or crushed ice. Step cuts create broad mirrored flashes rather than constant glitter.
The best sparkle is the pattern the wearer enjoys in the lighting where the ring will actually live.
